So, you're probably wondering whatever happened to the Nelsons. We're still here...just not updating anyone on what's been going on since sometime in October! I have to say that I (Lyn) am mostly to blame as I volunteered to post halloween pics and that never happened, so here's a picture of the spunky kitty and two jellyfish.
Fern & I went to visit my family for a couple days. We got to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage up Rock Canyon and had a great time visiting with everyone, including my sweet grandpa.
How is this for contrasting next pictures?
The day after Thanksgiving is White Friday when we get to go up Icicle Canyon and get our Christmas tree. It was a beautiful sunshiney day and the kids loved sledding and playing in the snow.
We also had our traditional fancy picnic complete with plastic champagne glasses and turkey sandwiches on rolls--yum!
And here are the fearless Christmas tree explorers taking a self-portrait :) We have been getting our tree in the forest for years now and it is always an adventure and fun to find one just the right personality for our house.
And then there were treats... I love baking for Christmas. I have to admit I go a little overboard, but I have too many things that I love to eat this time of year. It's hard to pick a favorite, but one of my new favorites is homemade tangerine gumdrops.
And this sweet little drawing is of "Kombucha the bear". Not sure how he came about, but Fern loves to draw him & he is so cute! She also loves to draw kitties and is happy with any piece of paper and pen. Fern is a very expressive artist; Henry is more of a precision draftsman. He doesn't draw whimsical things--he draws schematics of his various inventions.
Here is Henry and his scarecrow friend. They had the funnest time one morning making buddies out of their clothes. It was a little disconcerting when we put them to bed and it looked like there was someone standing there...
One day we had very low tides, so we went to West Seattle to explore the tidepools for the afternoon. It was a beautiful day and we discovered a lot of wildlife.
Our garden has been growing great and the kids like to help out. Fern is a great rhubarb assistant by cutting off the leaves. Having a garden is so much fun. It's nice to walk through the garden and select what you are going to eat for dinner that night.
Fern loves Daddy Daughter Dates. No sooner have they got back from one, and she starts discussing what to do for the next one. In the above picture, Caleb & Fern went out to eat at a cool eatery with couches and a record player and they played around taking fun pictures. This one turned out nice.
Other times.....
FYI: Henry Day is arriving soon. It is Henry's b-day celebration. Since his full birthday is so close to Christmas, we decided to celebrate on his half birthday. That means no cake and presents in December. (Although since this December will be his baptism, there will probably be a little something.) Anyhow, IF you wanted to do something for Henry on his birthday, you should do it for June 16th.
Also, we would encourage you not to send a gift, but to send the equivalent $ amount, as he is trying to save up for a VERY special Lego set. You should see his eyes light up with pure innocent joy when he sees pictures of this set... He has been working with Caleb and other odd jobs to add to his life savings. Secretly we will help pay for it, but we want him to work and save to be able to purchase it, not just ask and have it gifted.
Also, birthday wish phone calls will be great that day too. :)
Thank you very much.

Garden gloves. To think that was all that really stood between me and loving gardening.
I remember as a child dreading weeding, raking out the big rocks, and working in the garden in general. A couple years back I got some gloves and I have discovered that I LOVE being outside working in the earth. When it is cold and rainy, I really find myself longing to find some more long forgotten plants around our house to weed around and check on the garden. I love seeing the potato plants emerge from the ground and see the little beet and carrot tops come up. My lovely 14+ rhubarb plants are lots of fun to tend (thinning, deciding which stalk to pull next, picking off slugs to throw to the anxious chickens). Our garden is double the size of last year’s and I’m excited for some more sun so everything will grow! PLEEAASSEEE let this summer be nice and warm—I really want some tomatoes—last year they all molded...
Anyway, funny how time (and gloves) change what you enjoy.
